On February 12, 2025, sixteen Scouts and eight leaders from Scouts BSA, Cub Scouts, and Venturing gathered for a historic event—the 1st Annual Conquistador Council Scout Day at the New Mexico State Capitol.
This special occasion took place during the 57th Legislative Session, providing young Scouts with an up-close look at state government in action.
The Conquistador Council received two official Certificates in honor of its 100th anniversary and long-standing commitment to serving the youth of Southeastern New Mexico. In the Senate, Senator David Gallegos proudly sponsored the Certificate, while Representatives Randall Pettigrew, Elaine Sena Cortez, and Jimmy Mason sponsored it in the House of Representatives. This recognition underscores the Council’s century-long dedication to developing future leaders through Scouting.

During their visit to the Round House, Scouts had the unique opportunity to meet with lawmakers, state police officers, and lobbyists. They were even given the privilege of sitting on the Rostrums of both the House and Senate, where they observed firsthand the legislative process as lawmakers debated and voted on key issues affecting New Mexico.
Beyond politics, the Round House offered another exciting experience—an extensive collection of art from New Mexico artists. Each Scout found a favorite piece, discovering how the state’s rich artistic heritage is woven into its government halls. Two Scouts had an especially memorable experience, exchanging challenge coins with members of the state police and a representative, a tradition symbolizing camaraderie and respect.
The event was a tremendous success, leaving Scouts inspired and eager to return. With this year’s visit setting the stage, we look forward to seeing even more participation in future Scout Days at the State Capitol. See you next year!
